Taryn, The Court of Shadows, Oriana, Oak, Vivi, Heather, Nicasia, and even Madoc are developed thoughtfully. The secondary characters in THE QUEEN OF NOTHING also shine. Fans of Cardan and Jude are going to be extremely satisfied with the tension and romance that is built up throughout this book. It’s amazing how much two people can hate and love each other so much. There’s just enough explanation to remind readers of the events and characters without anything being too redundant.Ĭardan and Jude’s relationship is what makes this series so compulsively readable. Holly Black does a great job bringing plot threads from the previous books into this one without making anything too confusing. The world and politics of Faerie are expanded upon greatly in this final book. Jude accepts this mission and soon finds herself back in Faerie, face-to-face with the husband who banished her: the wicked High King of Faerie, Cardan. Jude still has the power from THE CRUEL PRINCE that makes her immune to fairy glamours. Taryn has (surprisingly) murdered her husband, Locke, and needs Jude to pretend to be her so she won’t confess. Jude’s drive and ambition return when her twin sister, Taryn, visits her in the mortal realm. Now, Jude is a queen banished from her own land who makes money as a fairy bounty hunter, among other things. She trusted Cardan, but he tricked her out of Faerie. It continues shortly after THE WICKED KING, with Jude banished to the mortal world. THE QUEEN OF NOTHING is the epic conclusion of The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black.

The social aspect was important as while the men of the villages could get together for a pint at the pub or the working man’s club, women were a bit more isolated. Speakers would talk about anything, from the history of China to the best way to get bread to rise. It originally came across from Canada, and was created as a way to help women in rural communities come together to develop a bit of a social life, and have the opportunity to learn about a broad range of topics and issues. The book starts off with the founding history of the Women’s Institute. So much so that when it had to go back to the library I promptly bought it off Amazon, and still reread it every so often. Perhaps it was because it was quite clearly about woman’s role in the war something which I think tends to be neglected and therefore is worth reading about.Įither way I took the book home with me and got thoroughly absorbed in it. Maybe it was the fact that it was about the Second World War, a part of history for which I only know basic dates and bits about the “Home Front” that I remember from Middle School history classes. But when I saw “ Jambusters” sitting on the shelf of my local library something made me pick it up. Like many I tend to view the WI as the whole “Jam and Jerusalem” thing, a bunch of middle-aged ladies singing hymns and churning out award-winning cakes. Despite living in a small countryside village between the ages of 3 and 25, I never actually joined the local Women’s Institute. His victims are generally reduced to the generic type their killer prefers and remain somehow abstract. Serial-killer novels often concentrate on an attempt to understand causation or motivation of the killer. Still he is the only character speaking in the first person and addressing the reader directly. He does not have all that much to say along the way as the bulk of the novel is focussed on three women - his mother, the twin sister of one of his victims, and the woman detective who is finally instrumental in his arrest. The person under sentence is a multiple killer and he does indeed write some notes about his final day on death row, but he finds it difficult to remain clinically detached, as who wouldn't? He begins his notes twelve hours before his date with the executioner writing in the present tense as an observer might, but he will end dissolved in tears. While the title might suggest a detached, even clinical, approach to an execution, the book itself is far from either. “The fascinating story behind Albert Camus’ coldblooded masterpiece. Kaplan tells this story with great verve and insight, all the while preserving the mystery of its creation and elusiveness of its meaning.” -Los Angeles Review of Books “For American readers, few French novels are better known, and few scholars are better qualified than Kaplan to reintroduce us to it. Kaplan has hung warm flesh on its steely bones.” -The New York Times Reading The Stranger is a bracing but somewhat bloodless experience. “To this new project, Kaplan brings equally honed skills as a historian, literary critic, and biographer. In the process, she reveals Camus’ achievement to have been even more impressive-and more unlikely-than even his most devoted readers knew. How did a young man in his twenties who had never written a novel turn out a masterpiece that still grips readers more than seventy years later? With Looking for The Stranger, Alice Kaplan tells that story. If the twentieth century produced a novel that could be called ubiquitous, The Stranger is it. It’s the rare novel that’s as likely to be found in a teen’s backpack as in a graduate philosophy seminar. Since its publication in France in 1942, Camus’s novel has been translated into sixty languages and sold more than six million copies. The Stranger is a rite of passage for readers around the world. A literary exploration that is “surely destined to become the quintessential companion to Camus’s most enduring novel” (PopMatters).
